As the interiors trends for the AW20 season have begun to emerge, one familiar concept is demonstrating its staying power. One of the most resilient interiors trends of the decades has got to be hygge: the cosy, comforting Danish style.

There’s nothing like retreating to a cosy haven and indulging in a calm environment to offset a busy lifestyle. It might seem like a solitary affair, but hygge is inherently social. In fact, Scandinavian winters are perfect for hyggeligt (hygge-like) gatherings of loved ones. Today we’re taking a close look at how you can emulate hygge practices for your next event; and in doing so, treat your guests to a luxurious moment of bliss.

Hygge event tip 1: Curate the perfect scents and aromas

Scented candles are key to the overall hygge concept. It’s no surprise that Scandinavian countries are said to be among the largest consumers of scented candles in the world, relatively speaking.

Go natural: mint, tea and musky juniper berries are ideal for setting the tone at your event.

Hygge event tip 2: Create a little snug

Hygge event tips sofa

Calm, cosy and snuggly: that’s the goal here. Firstly, swap the accent chairs for sofas to encourage socialising. You’ll also need to use your sofa like a blank canvas. There’ll be no plain sofas here. Layer them up with faux sheepskin rugs and scatter cushions. Leave your guests plenty of throws, too (we love to store them in a Rattan Pot).

Hygge event tip 3: Dim the lighting

When considering your hygge look, lighting can be make-or-break. Luckily, we’ve got lots of different lighting options (you can see them all here) for you to consider. We often use a selection of our Chrome Lanterns in hygge concepts; though the Arken Floor Lamp also works really well.

Hygge event tip 4: Cater like a Dane

hygge event tips food

If you’re hosting a hygge-inspired event with alcohol, you’ll need to make sure you’ve got your mulled wine recipe just right. We love this recipe, put together by Ina Garten. Read it here.

Although a lot of hygge food is meaty, there are plenty of vegetarian and vegan options to help to cater for everyone on your guestlist. Who wouldn’t want to snack on some delicious-looking cherry jam Danishes by Oh, Ladycakes? Get the recipe here.

Hygge event tip 5: Bring the outdoors in

hygge event tips nature

A calming touch of nature is best achieved by scattering some plants around your event space. The garden section of our warehouse is filled with plants that promise to give a hyggeligt feel to your venue (and you can browse them all here).

Psst: you wouldn’t know it, but they’re artificial. No need to worry about keeping them fed and watered!

Hygge event tip 6: Don’t rush

It feels like the pace of life is picking up with every year, but for your hygge event it needs to slow all the way down. Luckily, we make sure our drop off and pick up times are as flexible as possible, so we never impose a deadline on you. With round-the-clock delivery and pick up, you can let your hyggeligt event go on for as long as your guests need.

Despite having very little daylight in the winter months, our Danish neighbours frequently top the lists of the world’s happiest people. With such a dedication to cosiness and calmness, we can certainly see why.
